Mints


Mint, the very important word in coin collectors fraternity. What is Mint? Mint is a place where coins, special medals, Tokens etc. are produced under the government authority.Such mints have their own identification marks known as 'Mint Marks'. On Indian coins, the mint mark can be found exactly under the year in which the coin was minted.

Indian coins are produced in Indian as well as foreign mints.

India Government Mints (IGMs) are as below:

Mumbai:

The Mumbai Mint was established in 1829 A.D. Initially it was controlled by His Excellency, the Governor of Bombay Presidency. It was transferred to Government of India in 18th May 1876.   It is a premier institution renowned for highest quality of manufacturing medals of different alloys.

Kolkata:

Originally different minting facilities were created in and around Kolkatta in the 18th Century. One of the mints was modernised in the year 1952 and it was known as Allipore Mint. Later-on Government of India, renamed it as India Government Mint, Kolkatta. This unit is also having all facilities of refining, minting coins and manufacture of medals.

Hyderabad:

The erstwhile Nizam’s Mint at Hyderabad was taken over by the Government of India in 1950.The history of the Nizam’s Mint can be traced back to 1803, when the official Mint was established under Nawab Sikinder Jah, the 3rd Nizam. Later on the Mint was constructed on 13th July 1903 at Saifabad and the present Mint at Cherlapally was started on 20th Aug 1997 with modern machinery.

Noida:

The New Mint at Noida is the first Mint to be established by the Government of India in the post independence period.The Mint started its production with the minting of Stainless Steel Coins in 1988.At present, Noida Mint is minting foreign coins in addition to domestic coins as and when order is received.

Foreign Mints:

Due to the increasing demand of coins during 1985-2002, Indian government minted coins in foreign mints. They are Taegu Korea; Seoul Korea; Royal Mint Ottawa, Canada; Royal Mint London, UK; Birmingham, UK; Pretoria Mint, South Africa; Tower Mint, UK; Mexico City Mint; Kremnica Mint,Slovakia and Moscow Mint, Russia.
